MEMBERSHIP BADGES

Claremont

The club was formed as Claremont-Cottesloe in 1919, through the merger of the new Claremont Football Club and the existing Cottesloe Beach Football Club. In 1921, it was admitted to the B-Grade competition (the equivalent of the reserves) and in 1926 the club's application to join the WAFL was accepted. Its first enamel badge as a WAFL club was issued in its inaugural season and the club gave members a new enamel badge every year until the end of 1969, except for the underage years of 1942, 1943 and 1944 (when cardboard badges were issued). From 1976 until 1981, inclusive, the club again issued badges, but each member only received one badge at the start of that period, with a replacement year pin being sent out for attaching to the badges at the start of each season. Later, badges were issued from 1986-1992 and 2002-2008. In 2021, a badge was produced for premium members only.

East Fremantle

As one of the oldest surviving clubs in the WAFL, East Fremantle membership badges were likely first issued around 1919, although the earliest one I have seen was from 1922. The club issued some of the most ornate of the early membership badges and the fact that Old Easts was very successful in those days means many of their badges are quite sought after because they are for premiership years. Enamel badges were issued to members each year until at least 1940. It's unclear whether any badges were issued in the period from 1941-1944, but normal service was resumed from 1945 until the end of the 1971 season. Thereafter, East Fremantle issued very few badges, with only 1983, 1986 and 1997 seeing the production of proper membership badges (keyrings were produced in 1984 and 1985).

East Perth

After joining the WAFL in 1906, East Perth was well entrenched in the competition by WWI and started issuing membership badges soon after the war ended. I've not seen a 1919 badge, but I assume one would have been made and I have seen a badge for 1920. It's not clear whether East Perth issued badges throughout the second world war, but the club did continue with the practice until the end of 1960. From 1961 until the end of 1971, members were issued with a changeable year pin at the start of each season, which was designed to slot in to the membership badges that were issued to existing members in 1960 and new members thereafter. The Royals again issued membership badges from 1980 to 1987, before switching to cardboard/plastic shield-shaped badges from 1988 until 2006.
