WAFL Collectables

Budgets, Cards, Badges and Jumpers. Anything and everything WAFL.

STICKERS, TRANSFERS/DECALS ETC

Though cards are widely considered the Rolls Royce of collectables, stickers and transfers (or decals, as they are sometimes called) are extremely rare and form an integral part of any serous collector's wishlist. The likelihood is that most of them ended up on car bumpers or bedroom mirrors and, therefore, have not survived the test of time. Those that have can fetch big prices at auction. And there are more identifiable sets than you might have thought, though it's sometimes very difficult to find out when they were made. Dates are, therefore, often approximate. The lists underneath each set description are, so far as I know, the full listing of stickers/decals/transfers in that set. If one is crossed through, that means I have it in my collection.

c1951-1955 Mobilgas WAFL Transfers/Decals

So far as I am aware, this is the earliest of the decals issued by the service stations, starting something of a connection between the WAFL and the oil companies which would extend into the 1980s. This first issue, though, was very simple. There were eight decals - one for each of the WAFL clubs. Each had the words "Follow (club name) on Mobilgas". All the transfers were manufactured by Melbourne-based company De Neefe and sets were issued for the VFL and SANFL clubs in those States. The only one I have seen from the WAFL clubs is for East Fremantle, in which the player appears to be wearing the jumper the club wore from 1951-1953. To put a better date on these, I would need to see a few of the other clubs' versions, though.

c1951-1955 Mobilgas Special WAFL Transfers/Decals

Mobil produced another set of eight decals in this era, this time bearing the words "Follow (team name) on Mobilgas Special". They differ from the set of decals above only in that they carry the word "special" after "Mobilgas". Just like the other Mobil issues, there were also releases in Victoria and South Australia, though they were much more colourful because they featured club animal mascots rather than a footballer in team colours. I've seen four versions from this set, and the jumpers depicted on those four clubs appear to date the set to 1951.

c1958 Shell WAFL Transfers/Decals

Not to be outdone by their competitors at Mobil, Shell issued their own eight-decal series in  about 1958. More difficult to find today than their Mobilgas counterparts, they featured club logos inside the familiar gold Shell logo and were manufactured by the Ballarat Litho & Printing Co Pty Ltd. On the front, they carried the team's name and nickname, along with the word "WITH COMPLIMENTS OF YOUR SHELL DEALER".

1963 Shell Autograph Football Book Stickers/Stamps

In 1963, Shell service stations issued an autograph book, along with sheets of stamps that featured black-and-white player photos and biographic details. Most of the stamps came in sheets of four, measuring about 39mm x 127mm. They were designed to be cut into individual stamps and stuck into the book. There were 14 sifferent sheets of four stamps and one sheet of eight. The stamps rarely turn up loose these days.

1964 Milo WAFL Transfers/Decals

Surprisingly, this set of stickers was produced in about 1964 for WAFL and SANFL clubs only. For once, the VFL was left out. They were made by the Murian Transfer Company and issued inside sealed cellophane wrappers in tins of Milo. The backing for the decal measures about 54mm x 54mm, while the decal itself is a little smaller. I've yet to see a Claremont, South Fremantle or Subiaco version from this set.

c1964-1967 Esso Oil Drop Man WAFL Transfers/Decals

With Mobil and Shell already making WAFL club transfers, Esso decided to get in on the act around the mid-1960s. The company had De Neefe, of Melbourne, make club transfers for the VFL and WAFL clubs only, featuring the famous Esso Oil Drop Man. Just like all the 1960s transfers, these are extremely rare and most had not been seen until a full set turned up in 2013.

c1964-67 Mobilgas Special Cartoon WAFL Transfers/Decals

In the mid 1960s, Mobil was big on the football card scene, issuing sets of 40 postcard-sized trading cards in both 1964 and 1965. But the other service station brands were putting out sets of transfers/decals, so Mobil also got in on the act. This set of transfers, released in the mid-60s, was made by De Neefe Transfers, of Melbourne, and read "Follow 'team name' on Mobilgas Special". The word "Special" was in blue on this set.

1965-66 Go Well Go Shell WAFL Transfers/Decals

In the mid 1960s, most of the oil companies were making doing their best to build a connection with local football. Mobil was issuing cards by this stage, but the others were all issuing transfers. In 1965, Shell issued a set of rosette-style transfers and advertised them heavily in the Football Budget. They continued advertising them into 1966. As usual, there was one for each of the eight WAFL teams and they featured the words "Go well GO SHELL GO team name". Interestingly, these were made locally, by Screenprints, of 125 Main St, Osborne Park.

c1965 Golden Fleece WAFL Transfers/Decals

Continuing with the service station/oil company theme, Golden Fleece also got in on the action in the mid-1960s. Their transfers were made by both De Neefe and Selex and were issued for clubs in the WAFL, VFL, SANFL and Tasmanian competitions. The eight WAFL transfers featured the words "I LIKE ... CLUB NAME AND GOLDEN FLEECE". The "Activ 8" logo appeared at the bottom.

c1965 BP Flag WAFL Transfers/Decals

Given Esso, Shell and Golden Fleece were producing decals in the mid-60s, it should come as no surprise that BP was also in on the act. In around 1965, the company it issued a set of transfers featuring club-coloured flags, which were manufactured by Selex. As with many of the other sets from this time, these were also made for VFL and SANFL clubs.

c1965 Artcolour WAFL Transfers/Decals

This is undoubtedly my favourite set of WAFL transfers/decals because of the colourful designs. Made by De Neefe in the mid-1960s, I have been unable to find out how they were issued, but they were also made for VFL, SANFL and Tasmanian football clubs. The WAFL versions were also used on the bottom of ashtrays to make a set of WAFL ashtrays which feature on this website in the "cups and glasses" section here. It's interesting to note that I have seen two different versions of the South Fremantle decal from this set, so perhaps two different sets were made.

1968 JJ Cash's WAFL Stickers

This set of eight round stickers was reputedly issued by a company called JJ Cash's in 1968, though I've never seen any real evidence of this. The stickers have a diameter of about 73mm and can also be found in an embroidered cloth version. I'm yet to see either the Claremont or South Fremantle versions, though I have seen the cloth version of each. The other six became reasonably common after an eBay seller found a stash of old stock.

c1975 Marlboro Cup WAFL Stickers

Like the oil companies, the cigarette companies were big supporters of football in the days before tobacco advertising laws put an end to their involvement. Rothmans, especially, was involved in many aspects of the WAFL. But it was Marlboro that put out a set of eight stickers in about 1975, each sticker measuring about 76mm x 128mm and featuring a WAFL club. Though I've seen all eight club versions, I've found it particularly difficult to collect these, and am still looking for five club versions to complete my collection.

1975 Homecrafts WAFL Stickers

In 1975, Homecrafts entered the WAFL market when it put out a set of eight WAFL stickers. Until recently, I had only ever seen the Perth version from this set, but another collector recently showed me six others. The stickers are actually made of a cloth-like material, rather than plastic/paper and measure about 61mm x 79mm.

c1980 WAFL Club Logo Stickers

These stickers were produced by an unknown maker sometime around 1980 and feature the old w-style club logos, which were replaced by the end of 1982 by the shield-style club logos. Interestingly, there were two different stickers issued for East Perth, Perth, Subiaco and West Perth (though the only difference was in the colour of the border). The sizes vary a little, but they generally measure around 140mm x 80mm.

c1980 Peters Icecream WAFL Stickers

Peters Icecream was an iconic WA brand, which had existed in Perth since around the turn of the century. Its connection to the WAFL stretched back to the 1960s when it sold ice cream in club-coloured half-gallon tins. This set of eight stickers, again in club colours, was its last WAFL issue and the company is now owned by multinational Nestle.

c1983 Ampol WAFL Stickers

Though a little late, Ampol decided to jump on the WAFL bandwagon in the mid 1980s. The company had already made VFL stickers in 1974 and 1975, so when it came to designing WAFL stickers in 1983, they just used the same design. These have only come to light recently and it has taken some time for most of them to come out of the woodwork.

1984 Mobil Winners Stickers

After a hiatus of 11 years, Mobil jumped back on the WAFL bandwagon in 1982 at a time when the league was trying to maximise its licensing profits. This issue of eight stickers (one for each WAFL club) was very popular and aren't overly difficult to find today. They were one of the first issues to feature the new shield-style logos, which replaced the old w-style logos in 1982.

1997 Swan Districts Stickers

Produced as part of a fundraising effort for the club, this set of stickers was printed by Supreme Printers and was designed to be housed in a special booklet. There are 56 known stickers in the set - 28 featuring player photos and the other 28 featuring text details of a player's biography. There is, however, room for 76 stickers in the book (38 photo stickers and 38 text stickers). It is believed the project ran out of money and the missing stickers were never produced. The numbers used are the players' jumper numbers, so it is not known why some of the numbers are repeated.

2007 WAFL Stickers

After issuing cards in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006, the WAFL decided to produce stickers instead in 2007. The stickers were designed to be stuck on a poster (one for each club), but few of the posters survive. This was the biggest of the sticker sets produced by the WAFL, boasting 146 stickers (16 for each club except Subiaco, which had 18).

2008 WAFL Stickers

Obviously, the league was happy with the response it received to the 2007 stickers, because they issued an almost identical sticker set in 2008. The only real difference was the addition of "08" in the background of the player photograph. However, the size of the set was massively scaled down. This time, just 90 stickers were issued - 10 for each club, including one legend sticker. Being a new club, Peel did not have a legend sticker, but instead had a sticker featuring their coach Chris Waterman.
